Educational Background

Mike Bleskie is currently completing his Master’s in Political Management (MPM) at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. He holds a BA in Communication Studies from Laurentian University, and an Ontario Advanced Diploma (3 years) in Public Relations from Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology, both in Sudbury, Ontario. Mike graduated from Lockerby Composite School in 2010 for his Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Mike has also completed the Student Leadership Certificate Program from Cambrian College in January of 2012, and regularly participates in professional development programs such as the Municipalities Matter municipal election manager training conducted by the Canadian Labour Congress in 2010, and the Global Leaders’ Centre held by Global Vision Canada in Bracebridge. Skills Overview

Mike has extensive public relations skills which vary from writing for various needs (media kits, media releases, public service announcements, et cetera), crisis communications, strategic communications research, event coordination, desktop publishing (InDesign) and photography. Educated in leadership and teamwork development. Profi cient in computers, soft ware, mobile technology and social media, including office suites (Microsoft Office, OpenOffice), graphic design (Paint.net, Adobe Creative Suite 6, et cetera).

 

Previous Experience

Mike has valuable starting experience as a communications writer and researcher, bolstered by two years of involvement in student government, as well as extensive exposure to records management and front-line communications work.

 

Project and Communications Assistant

Summers 2015 and 2016

Wrote and proofed media materials for the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines such as speaking notes for Minister Michael Gravelle and infrastructure funding announcements. Consulted other members of the Communications Services Branch on activities in strategic communications and media relations. Conducted a variety of research projects on Ministry services, consultation with First Nations, and the media environment of Northern Ontario.

As part of a special project, assisted in the document preparation and digitization of approximately 500,000 pages of confidential records and documents, and assisted in planned document destruction, in addition to clerical duties within the office..

 

Marketing and Promotions Assistant

Developed the messaging and marketing strategies for a major local music festival in a fast-paced environment. Tasks included managing event development, developing marketing strategies to increase ticket sales, day-to-day website upkeep, managing community conversations on social media, assisting in creating and distributing event collateral and mixed marketing materials, organizing media relations activities, and coordinating advertisements with local media, among many general event duties.

 

Vice President, Students’ Administrative Council

Oversaw Cambrian College’s student government operations under the supervision of the council President, advising on all external matters affecting students. Served as the Executive Officer in the absence of the President. Served as a primary advocate for student issues on campus. Assisted running student events. Ensured student representation in college committees. Served the College’s President Student Advisory Committee. Handled all front desk reception matters on a rotating basis.

Served first term as Director of Student and Academic Affairs. Acted as initial contact and resource for students with academic concerns and/or appeals, served as a student’s agent at academic grievance meetings. Served on the Curriculum Review Committee and the Academic Advisory Committee.

 

Student Intern

Seven-week work placement as part of the Public Relations Program at Cambrian College. Observed the operations of a small design agency and the process of recruiting and retaining clients. Created various writing pieces for the purpose of promoting businesses, such as blog articles, short research papers, and presentations. Conducted public speaking engagements on topics such as cyberbullying.

 

Communications Assistant (Student)

Conducted interviews, took photographs, wrote and edited news features for the College website. Curated niche market lists for journalists nationwide. Digitized and archived department photos and records, and assisted department heads with other administrative, marketing and communications tasks.

 

Data Technician (Student)

July – December 2011

Responsible for varied records management tasks, including using high-speed and large-format scanners to digitize, doctor, and categorize varied documents. Also assisted in miscellaneous management tasks such as transporting materials off-site and extracting data from hard drives.

 

Community Involvement

Served as the Vice-Chair of the Minnow Lake Community Action Network, and as Financial Officer of the Laurentian Political Science Association. Student member in good standing of the Canadian Public Relations Society. Completed training in leadership skills with Cambrian College (Leadership Certificate Program), the Ontario Ministry of Education (SpeakUp), and Global Vision (Global Leaders Centre).
